The Warrior Maiden Melanie Dickerson Books
I love Melanie Dickerson and the Hagenheim books, but after not loving The Orphan's Wish, I was worried going into this one. The worry was unfounded. This one is back in the camp of all the other stories in the series I love so much.If you're looking for a retelling of Mulan set in Asia and closer to the original story, this isn't it. Mulan is Asian (or "from the Orient" in keeping with the time period), but this story is set in the Medieval Germany world Melanie Dickerson has created/used for her entire series and so this story stays true to that. Instead, Mulan is the illegitimate daughter of a soldier who fought wars in the Orient. Contrary to normal cliches, when the father brings home his illegitimate daughter after the war, his wife takes her in and loves her like her own.
When her father dies and her mother will be turned out of their home if the family fails to send a soldier to fight in the liege lord's war, Mulan chooses to dress as a man and go to war in her father's place instead of marrying the local butcher.
This story felt like Mulan + Joan of Arc and it was quite fun. Mulan's insecurities and strengths felt believable. She was not a damsel in distress, but she also wasn't out there to prove anything. She was just trying to be honorable and do the right thing. (There's a part at the end that I'm sure some women would have a problem with, but especially in Medieval times, there was NO way a woman would have been able to fight in that situation. She would have been killed, there was no way around that one.)
This review wouldn't be complete without touching on Wolfgang. As with the rest of the men in this series, he is honorable and kind, but he does have some regrets in his past and has a complicated relationship with his brother, Steffan, which makes things interesting. To my recollection, this is the first book in the series where the narrative introduces a third point of view instead of just bouncing back and forth between the main characters. I enjoyed it and cannot WAIT to hear more of Steffan's story in the future (and find out which fairy tale will be his).
This book can certainly stand alone, but since the series is about an entire family, I highly recommend starting at the beginning and enjoying the ride of their stories playing out to different fairy tales.

The Warrior Maiden Melanie Dickerson Books Reviews
Having read nearly all of Melanie Dickerson's previous works, I knew that The Warrior Maiden would be excellent. There were certainly some surprises though that I was not expecting. To begin with, in previous books the name of the main character did not give away the fairy tale the story was based on. This book did right away so the reader does not have to guess and piece together clues to figure it out. However, even though many readers may be familiar with the overall story, the large variation in setting requires others changes as well. Compared to previous works in this series, I found that the male character had a much more prominent role than I recalled in the other books. I found the larger emphasis on warriors, knights, and war allowed the male perspective to be emphasized. The story also alternates between the two main characters which provides deeper insights into both.
While this book is number 9 in a series, it is not necessary to have read the previous books to enjoy this title.characters. That said, characters from previous books in the series are mentioned in passing and knowledge of the previous books is helpful. Dickerson's books are written from a Christian perspective but are not pushy. The middle ages setting provides the perfect opportunity for prayer and Bible verses to be included and seem a natural part of the story. Dickerson also does a fantastic job of including accurate historical detail.
The typical audience for these books is teen girls. I have found them to be completely enjoyable and would encourage anyone of any age to read them. I did find that this particular addition to the series with the more prominent male characters may be interesting to young teen boys and could be considered as a read-aloud for a mixed group.
Disclosure of Material Connection I received the book Warrior Maiden n via NetGalley. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.
I couldn’t put it down- loved every minute of this read!
This is a great read for anyone who wants adventure and romance without going into the bedroom. It may be my new favorite of M. Dickerson's writings, or at least top two.
I love the fantasy genre and the Mulan story and thought I'd love this book too, but I didn't. All the characters spent more time praying than actually doing anything in the novel. I couldn't even finish it. Wish I had spent my money elsewhere.
Mulan is the protagonist I’ve been waiting my whole life to meet! I loved everything about this story and the characters. I can’t wait to see what comes next in Hagenheim!
I always love Melanie ‘s stories. I buy her books without checking to see what they are about , because all her books are excellent. This one I Loved !!
