Wonderful perspective on a problem that exists in contemporary America. There is no family continuity today and people are sent to warehouses for the elderly. The caregivers are for the most part wonderful people but the circumstances they are presented with on a day-in, day-out basis rob them of their empathy. This is a wonderful perspective from the eyes of one person playing the end game of life.
This is a short but lovely, tender story of a kindly retired professor who still very much misses his deceased wife, Marie. I'm glad I discovered this little gem—so much so that when I reached the end I immediately reread it, and enjoyed it even more the second time. I have a feeling I will be thinking about this story for a long time to come.
I picked up "I'm Flying" on a whim and decided to take a peek last night. Two hours later, as I finished the last sentence, the words began bouncing off long-forgotten memories, stirring things inside. I like books that make me think. I like authors who take me from A to B with subtle signs and gentle jibes. I adore storytellers with a gift for allowing the reader to fill in the big blanks by giving just enough small details surrounding an event.
James Ross delivers. He delivers big.
His central character, Dr. Martin Connor, bloomed in my chest last night. In truth, I think he's inside all of us. I hope you'll let him in, too.
I have to say, James Ross has a true gift for carefully choosing words and phrases to produce an image or feeling. A man's (Dr. Connors) last dying wish...putting his affairs in order...memories of childhood...52 years of marriage...and the only desire he has left is to be with his wife. His caregivers seem to him more of a nuisance than a blessing, he wants to be alone. Still, he struggles with feelings of abandonment and loneliness. I Am Flying is a descriptive memoir of a man's review of his life.
As our population ages, the issue of end of life decisions become more and more importatn. This short story explores these issues for one man who finds himself in a nursing home without the power to make his own life decisions.
As the story progresses, we learn about the gentleman and his many conttributions as a renound educator. His support network is gone and his health is failing. With the help of a friend in the nursing home, he takes control of his life.
The story is soleful and yet you cheer for the old man as he learns to fly.
Mr. Ross use of words is lyrical and pleasurable. His story, I am flying, is totally engaging, and emotionally exhilarating and decimating. I wish all HealthCare and Social Worker employees read this story, and those who have elders in their group. Insightful and inspiring. One man's choice.
This novelette was suggested to me by its author, James F. Ross. I told him that I would give it a read and I am very glad I finally took the time to do just that. Mr. Ross has painted the perfect picture of one's day coming to a close - both literally and figuratively. Whilst such a subject can be overly poignant and downright sappy from the pen of a less skilled writer, there is only respect and timely acceptance here. In such few pages, he is able to convey an accomplished life filled with bittersweet joy and more than a few unspoken regrets. His ability to allow his character's voice to ring clear in the narrative like carillon chimes is something sadly lost to many writers. I highly recommend this wonderful read for anyone who is looking for an intelligent, honestly insightful story. I look forward to reading more of what Mr. Ross has to offer.
