The Cutting Edge A Lincoln Rhyme Novel Jeffery Deaver Books

Disappointing. I had a hard time finishing this book. It feels like a ghost writer took over and slapped Deaver's name on the cover. Positively sealed the fate for me when the author used exclamation points throughout the chapters. No way would Lincoln Rhyme's character an exclamation point. His last book was a disappointment; now this one was too. Not sure if I will purchase any other books by this author even though the ending of this book sets up the next one.

The Cutting Edge A Lincoln Rhyme Novel Jeffery Deaver Books Reviews

I have been a big Deaver fan for a long time and have read all of his books. This one was disappointing, to say the least. It meandered and at times I felt lost as to what he was trying to weave into the book. There was very little of Lucas and Amelia and more on a witness which actually bored me. I continued to read the book hoping it would get better, but it didn't.
There's never been a better story teller than Jeffrey Deaver. This author has never failed to impress this voracious reader. I am continually amazed and astounded that his books are forever better than the last one. The Cutting Edge was another wonderful story with more twists and turns than a roller coaster ride. If you're not reading Deaver you're missing out on one of the best authors of contemporary mystery and fiction in the world. From a voracious reader in foggy San Francisco who's anxiously awaiting his next book.
Unbelievably complicated. Hard to follow. Too many things happening. Plot is absurd. Skip this one. Earlier books much better. Less complex.
THE CUTTING EDGE starts as a rather traditional serial killer mystery with a little Jeffery Deaver thematic interest. A diamond cutter is murdered, along with two of his young customers. So, we learn a little about how the diamond trade works.

When Amelia walks the scene she learns that two possible witnesses are missing. One had a meeting just prior to the murders. The other, with the first initials “VL” was shot during the murders.

Since he has his own point of view, we learn this is the diamond cutter's assistant, Vimal. A subplot is Vimal's relationship with his father, also a diamond cutter, who wants Vimal to follow in his footsteps. Vimal has other ideas. He wants to be a sculpter, like Michaelangelo, who saw a piece of granite or marble as an image that needed to be released, like the statue of “David”.

Soon, the term kimberlite becomes important. There is some digging going on in Brooklyn where a geo-thermal project is going on (Kimberlite, the stone diamonds come from was found there.) But, apparently, a gas line is cut and two people are killed, forcing the city to shut down the project. We thought we were dealing with a psychopath who had something against young couples who were defiling the earth by misusing diamonds.

A little past midpoint Deaver throws another wrench into the works. A lawyer asks Lincoln to research the case against his client, a notorious Mexican drug smuggler, El Halcon. For some reason Lincoln takes the case, earning the enmity of law enforcement operations who want El Halcon put in a maximum security prison.

Okay, the last doesn't seem to have anything to do with either the diamond murders or the geo-thermal digging. When I first read it, I thought it was an unnecessary sidetrack. But it's just another one of Deaver's wild twists and it leads to the resolution of the whole case.

As I said, this isn't an ordinary mystery, because we learn something about diamonds, but just when we think we know who did what, Deaver adds another character at the end who planned the whole thing. I had no trouble keeping track of these people; I just thought there were too many masterminds involved. And the last one may have been a cliffhanger, an attempt to get you to read the next book. It's a kind of threat.
The Cutting Edge, the latest Lincoln Rhyme novel, has the usual Deaveresque twists and surprises. However, there is also a meta-surprise, in that the author goes beyond the usual serial killer hunt and creates complication after complication. Everything seems normal at first. We have the usual serial killer, the Promiser, this time, who apparently wants to kill engaged couples.

And so we begin with the murder of the engaged couple and the “diamantiere,” to whom they have come for their wedding rings. Then we have a hunt for the witness, the murdered jeweler’s apprentice, who quickly gets away after being shot at. Calling 911 to report the murder, he doesn’t give his name.

The case is referred to Rhyme, who begins the investigation. Cut to the serial killer, who is Deaver-baroque of course. He is a barking mad Russian, who doesn’t like the idea of diamonds being cut up and sold to people as jewelry.

Many minor characters turn up, including an insurance investigator--a British gent, who was once a cop, and has a thing for cryptic crossword puzzles. And then we have ecological issues and natural disasters.

Killings continue, while a B story breaks out. Eventually all the plots and subplots, and the A story and B story, come together, just when you are beginning to think there’s no way they can, or will--oh and there’s an epilogue that sets up the next novel in the series.

Recommended.

NOTES AND ASIDES Murder, mayhem, blood, much ado about diamond making.
Talk about a Tangled Web!!! This one took me for quite ride!!! Long... and I think more to this story for the future. I am a Lincoln Rhyme fan.. Have not read all the books. Wish they would make more movies with Lincoln.
This story took alot of concentration. I read fast so skim alot of what I can filler words, but you can't do that with Deaver's stories. You need to read every word... Loved the book but was really complicated so somewhat hard to read. Don't skimp on content for the likes of folks like me. Write on and keep Lincoln Alive and well.
Disappointing. I had a hard time finishing this book. It feels like a ghost writer took over and slapped Deaver's name on the cover.
